Orthognathic surgery and orthodontics

Occasionally upon examining a patient, an orthodontist will recommend jaw surgery in conjunction with braces. This is technically called orthognathic surgery.

Why is this done?

In order for the orthodontist to correct a bite on a patient, sometimes straightening the teeth, or the use of elastics is insufficient. Remember braces only move teeth - not the jaws.

Therefore if the teeth are out of alignment because of growth disparities of the jaws, it may be necessary to correct the jaw position as well as straightening the teeth to achieve a beautiful smile and a correct bite.

Ortho-buddy will help keep your teeth as clean as possible in either case!
